Domestic abuse is not a subject we like to discuss, but it happens in every community, and across all economic boundaries.
Here in Priest River, the Priest River ministry will host the second "Walk of Remembrance" on October 21 in honor of those who did not survive domestic violence.
After seeing that in the newspaper, it seemed an approprite time to let everyone know about the Battered Mothers Resource Fund.
This is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that maintains a nationwide database of safe houses that will accept mothers and their children. Unfortunately, not all safe houses do accept the children - which means many moms stay with their abuser out of fear for their children.
The sad fact is, every day in the U.S. ten women lose their lives to domestic abuse.
You can learn more about about this group, and learn more about domestic abuse, by visiting www.batteredmothers.com
Meanwhile, if you know anyone who needs to find a safe place, the phone number is:
1-866-592-7870I do some volunteer writing for this group, most recently an appeal for help with providing Christmas gifts to children who will be spending the holidays in a safe house. Thus I was able to speak with the director and find out that there are at least 2 safe houses in our immediate vicinity.
Help is nearby, so if you are a victim of domestic abuse, please don't hang in there until you become a statistic.
